Oak Hill have another test at Canton

September 22, 2011

Oak Hill Academy is still searching for their first win on the year.
But as the weeks continue, the opponents won’t get any easier, including Canton Academy.
The 2-3 Panthers have had an inconsistent season. After starting 0-2, they got their first victory over Hillcrest and went toe-to-toe with Winston Academy, arguably the toughest team in the district.
“They gave Winston a run for their money,” Raiders head coach Benjie Merchant said. “Athlete wise they’re like Manchester and they play hard.”
Merchant said all the teams they’ve played so far have improved across the board from last season, mostly with new additions.
The Raiders, 0-5, will still be without several players on the roster and like last week, and all season thus far, have been forced to shuffle players around into different positions which hasn’t helped bring any consistency.
Oak Hill has been shut out two weeks in a row, 33-0 to Manchester and 40-0 to Winona. They’re offense has struggled to put points on the board all season, just four touchdowns, including one interception returned for a score.
Merchant said the team has continued to stay positive and prepare for each game the best they can.
“We still got everyone practicing, everyone is going out and lifting hard,” he said.
Oak Hill will have the same offensive and defensive schemes for tonight and continue to work on what’s in place. Anything different, Merchant said and it “would probably hurt us more”.
Despite the struggles, there is hope in the future for the program at the junior high level who are 4-1 this season heading into the district title game on Thursday.
“We’re looking ahead, looking to the future,” Merchant said.
Kick-off for Fridays game is set for 7 p.m.
