Oak Hill falls to Lady Vols on the road

August 16, 2011

STARKVILLE - The Oak Hill Academy softball team has been in a giving mood lately.
In two conference games, the Lady Raiders surrendered three unearned runs in a 3-2 loss at Winston Academy and dropped a decision at Canton Academy after giving up five unearned runs.
“We can’t afford giving folks Christmas in August,” Oak Hill softball coach Marion Bratton said.
The Lady Raiders were in a giving mood once again on Monday, letting a 6-4 lead slip away and lost to the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers 10-6.
Oak Hill, which took a 5-5 overall and 0-2 conference records into Tuesday’s games against Winston Academy, got off to a poor start against Starkville Academy.
The Lady Raiders fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, but battled back to secure the 6-4 advantage before the host Lady Vols scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to win the game.
“Starkville has a good ballclub,” Bratton said. “We were a little worried in the first inning, then we got a little fire, got some runs back and had some intensity. I like intensity.”
Oak Hill didn’t get any offense from the top four positions in the batting order, but the fifth and sixth spots had five of the seven hits.
Meg McBrayer had three singles and Hunter Coleman added a pair of singles for the Lady Raiders. Lauren Hitt had the only extra base hit with a second-inning double.
Bratton hopes Oak Hill can sure up some things before the stretch run of the conference schedule.
“Our problem all year is we’ll have moments of weakness on defense,” Bratton said. “We can’t afford to lose another conference ballgame. We’re in a tough conference. Leake is undefeated, defending state champs and a good ballclub.”
