Early mistakes proved to be costly and decisive in Monday night’s cross-county rivalry between the Hebron Christian Lady Eagles and the Lady Raiders of Oak Hill Academy.
The Lady Raiders made the trip out to Hebron, but the short drive did not have any lasting affects, as they downed the Lady Eagles 8-3 in the end.
In the first inning, it looked like Hebron starter Beverly Blake was going to escape trouble. Two Lady Raiders were on, but there were two outs in the inning.
However, Oak Hill’s Mary Helon Hays came to the plate, and she sent a grounder past the short stop, into center field to plate the game’s first two runs.
Things did not settle down after that for Blake, as Paige Dawkins came to the plate with two on again. She sent a single into left field for a two-run hit to make it 4-0 Oak Hill.
In the bottom of the inning, Oak Hill’s Mamie Allen got through the top half of Hebron’s order with no problem. Cathryn Moore reached on a throwing error, but Allen struck out the side to put a stop to the threat.
Blake settled down in the second inning, but the Lady Eagles were unable to get anything going in their half of the inning. However, three seemed to be the magic number in inning number three.
The Lady Eagles were still trailing 4-0, but for the first time all night, they had something going on offense. Blake helped out her cause immediately with a leadoff double to the gap.
Alaina Hill then reached on a bunt hit. Chloe Tapley then sent a ground ball to third that ended up scoring two runs to make it 4-2.
A fly out to left, followed by a strikeout put a huge damper on the rally, but it continued with another run scoring to make it 4-3.
Unfortunately for Hebron, that would prove to be the last of their offensive output for the night.
In the top of the fourth, Oak Hill came out, ready to make a statement on offense.
Tori Ellis came to the plate with two runners on, and she laced a two-run single to the outfield to make it a 6-3 game.
Hays would then add her third RBI of the night, scoring Ellis on a hit to make it 7-3.
The Lady Raiders would pick up their final run of the night in the top of the firth inning, when Lauren Hitt drove in Abby Falkner.
The Lady Eagles could not respond in the bottom of the fifth or the bottom of the sixth, and that is when the game was called.
The Lady Raiders will play in the MRA tournament this weekend. All times are to be announced later this week.
The Lady Eagles will play tomorrow night at Winston. The first game will be at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a 6:30 B-Game.
