Nine Qualify For County Races Before Deadline

March 2, 2011

Nine people filled out their qualifying paperwork Tuesday on the final day of qualifying for Clay County offices, including a current West Point Selectman and a former mayoral candidate. Tuesday's rush brought the total number of people qualifying in Clay County to 42.
Three more candidates, Suzette White, Melissa Bobo Calvert and Harold Lathon, qualified Tuesday to run for chancery clerk. Others who qualified Tuesday are Clay County residents Chad McComic and current Ward 3 Selectman Charles Collins, both of whom qualified to run for supervisor, district 4.
Residents Nudennie Moore also qualified to run for justice court judge, district 1, and Richard Deanes, Jr. qualified to run for supervisor, district 3. Jesse J. Ivy qualified to run for supervisor, district 5, and Sherell Griffin Drake qualified to run for superintendent of Clay County Schools against incumbent Mae Brewer.
Five current elected officials received no opposition by the qualifying deadline, including circuit clerk Bob Harrell, county attorney Angela Turner Lairy, county coroner Alvin Carter, Jr., district 1 supervisor Lynn Horton and district one constable Sherman Ivy.
The next step in the election process is for republicans, democrats and election commissioners to meet and certify all candidates for the 2011 primary and general elections and determine whose name goes on the ballot. Election commissioners will then send the list of candidates to Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman by Thursday, March 3.
Independent candidates will be certified by Clay County election commissioners and after certification, will automatically be placed on the November ballot. Those running democrat will be certified by the democratic party, and those running republic will be certified by the republican party.
The primary election will be held Aug. 1, and the general election will be held Nov. 8.
