Central Holmes blocked the Hebron Christian Lady Eagles’ outside game very well on Tuesday night, but they could not control Tori Nichols, who took passes from her teammates and put them into the goal at will to lead her team to a 57-43 win over the Lady Trojans.
Nichols would eventually shoot for 45 points against the Central Holmes defense, that was completely ineffective under the goal.
“They (Central Holmes) guarded the perimeter out wide, and we got some good passes to Tori, and she did a good job of finishing,” said Hebron head coach Greg Watkins.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early and sizable lead after the first period, leading 17-4 going into the second. Central Holmes made a mild push in the second quarter, scoring 11 to Hebron’s six, but it was still the Lady Eagles on top at halftime 23-15.
Hebron continued the good offensive effort they started in the first, with 21 more points in the third. The defense held Central Holmes back to 16 points, and Hebron took a 44-31 lead into the final quarter of regulation.
In that fourth quarter, the offense put up 13 points, while the Lady Trojans were held to a mere dozen points, sealing the 14-point win for Hebron.
Nichols scored 45 of Hebron’s 57 points on the night, but Cathryn Moore contributed six points for the Lady Eagles.
Ruth Foster scored three points for Hebron, and Magen Tapley scored two. Hillary Arnold put up one point for Hebron as well.
The Lady Eagles are now guaranteed a spot at the State Tournament, in Benton, next week.
They will try and secure a top spot at that tourney in tomorrow afternoon’s game against Humphreys Academy.
The Lady Rebels had been ranked at No. 1 for most of the year, but they were upset by Immanuel in the opening round of the post-season. That game will start at 1 p.m.
