The Oak Hill Netters are currently battling at the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) AA Classification State Tennis Finals at the Ridgeland Tennis Center in Ridgeland.
The Oak Hill Tennis team and head coach Brian Middleton took a clean sweep in the morning semi-finals as Anna Ready and Jessi Cole advanced in their respective girlsâ€™ singles brackets and David McElwaine and John Willis Stevens punched their tickets to the finals as well. The Raider tennis team on dropped one set in the four semi-final matches.
Oak Hillâ€™s #1 girlsâ€™ singles player, Ready, won her first match in two sets defeating Brookhaven Academyâ€™s Moak 6-1, 6-0. Ready will return to the court in the less than hour against Lamar Schoolâ€™s Gibson at 1:00 pm.
In the #2 girlsâ€™ singles bracket, Cole played a marathon match against Laurel Christian Schoolâ€™s Rounsaville winning in two sets. Cole won the one hour and twenty minute first set coming from behind in a two game deficit to defeat Rounsavile 7-5. After the long set, Cole outlasted the Laurel Christian singles player and took the second set 6-2. Cole is slate to play around 1:30 pm in her final against Lamarâ€™s Arrington.
Stevens won his semi-final in the boysâ€™ #2 singles bracket with relative ease, making quick work of Laurel Christianâ€™s Pitts in two sets 6-3, 6-1. Stevens will play later this afternoon in the bracket final.
Oak Hillâ€™s #1 boysâ€™ singles player McElwaine was on the brink of elimination, and battled back into the match to claim a three set victory 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. McElwaine trailed 2-5 in the second set, but pulled five games back to clinch the set 7-5 and also the momentum which propelled him to victory in the final set 6-2.
â€śNever give up,â€ť commented OHA senior McElwaine following his over two hour match, â€śEven when I was down 5-2, I didnâ€™t give up and I came back and won it.â€ť
The OHA Netters will continue to contend for a state title this afternoon as Ready, Cole, Stevens, and McElwaine, will play in their bracket finals. The defending state title holders in mixed doubles, John Wesley Williamson and Kim Kelly, will get under way in their title defense at 1:00 pm against Laurel Christianâ€™s pairing of Jones and Wolf.
