Mayor Takes Leave of Absence

October 28, 2010

Mayor Scott Ross has taken personal leave from his duties on behalf of the City of West Point and will be unavailable for an undetermined amount of time. Mayor Ross has not resigned and will resume the duties of his office upon the conclusion of his leave.
According to a release from City Hall, Vice-Mayor Keith McBrayer will serve as Mayor during the absence of Ross, and city government will function as normal.
City Attorney Orlando Richmond said there is no specific limitation on how long a mayor can take a leave. Richmond said he doesn’t know what day Ross took his leave and doesn’t know when he will return, though the release was sent out on Thursday at around 4 p.m.
McBrayer will preside over city board meetings as mayor and be available as mayor.
Ward 5 Selectman Jasper Pittman, who was informed of Ross’ leave of absence Wednesday, said he foresees no changes in the functions of the city government with Ross gone. Pittman said he doesn’t suspect that Ross’ leave has anything to do with relationships between the Mayor and board and said the relationship has been good between the members of the board and Ross.
The next scheduled board meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 9.
