Mary Drake Batton Swoope

Mary Drake Batton Swoope, age 69, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Darlington Oakes in Verona.
Mrs. Swoope was born Aug. 8, 1941, in Vicksburg, to the late Alexander Alford Batton and Isabella Person Drake. She was a retired teacher from the Lowndes County School District. She was on the Board of Directors of MEA, and was a member of Aberdeen Jr. Auxiliary, and the West Point Pilot Club and a member of the DAR in Port Gibson. She attended Southwestern College in Memphis and graduated from Mississippi Southern University and received a Masters Degree in Gifted Education at MUW.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, EPC with the Rev. Steve Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Columbus. Pallbearers are Sandy Batton, Gib Reid, Trip Hairston, Keith McBrayer, Gray Swoope, Tim Wilson, Phillip Hankins, John Cunningham.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Swoope is survived by her husband, Edward A. Swoope; one son, James Prowell Swoope (Jennifer), all of West Point; a granddaughter, Mary Ray Swoope; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Alexander Alford Batton Jr.
Memorials may be made to the West Point Animal Shelter Humane Society or Chamberlin-Hunt Academy in Port Gibson.
Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
