The 2014 Relay for Life of Clay County is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 16 through 1 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Sally Kate Winters Park in West Point. The evening will begin with the survivors walk on the path through Sally Kate Winters Park. Part of the night’s festivities will include the Luminaria Ceremony.
“The Luminaria Ceremony is a highly anticipated event during Relay for Life for more than 20 years,” said Judy Ashmore, luminaria chair. “People purchase a luminary in honor or in memory of a cancer survivor, or someone who lost the battle with cancer. Their names are written on the bag and lit at dusk after being placed around the walking track at SKW park.”
Ashmore said it is a beautiful, solemn time marked by a moment of silence and remembrance. About 300 luminaries are purchased each year for a $10 donation to Relay for Life, according to Ashmore. Luminaria forms are available at the North Mississippi Medical Center business office or can be procured the night of the event.
