'Light Up the Night' slated for this weekend

April 13, 2012

Sally Kate Winters Family Services sponsors Light Up the Night. The gazebo is beautiful with candles lit in memory of the victims of child abuse.

Sally Kate Winters Park is the place to be Saturday evening. The event kicks of at 5 p.m. with registration for the Fun Run and 5K. At 5:30 the Kids Fun Run starts with a bang, follow by the 5K Run at 6 p.m. Inflatables will be there for the kids, food and drink vendors and entertainment by the Church Hill Cherubs, Betty Deans Dance Group and the First Baptist Church JAM Praise Team. It promises to be a fun night for the entire family. This is the third year for Light Up the Night, Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness with SKW Family Services.
“We are expecting to see more runners this year. The weather should be perfect and we want the whole West Point/Clay Co. community to come and enjoy the evening and the entertainment.”said Heather Usry, Outreach Coordinator. “We would love to have everyone at the park, but if you are at home and the runners come your way, wave and support them. Have signs if you like. As a runner myself, I know its nice to have that support.”
Prizes will be awarded for the different categories. First, second and third place ribbons will be given and the kids who run will receive a tee shirt and a medal. The Kids Fun Run will be from the corner of Broad St. and Commerce to the Fire Station on Broad St. and back. Traffic will be slowed to make sure everyone is who participates is safe. With great weather and a beautiful route, it will be a perfect day for a 5K run to bring attention to abused children.
At dusk, the Junior Auxiliary lights the luminary candles that surround the gazebo and the walkway to take a moment to remember and honor the small, silent victims of child abuse.
“It breaks my heart to see children come through our doors at SKW Family Services, but I am also thankful that we have a safe place for them.” said Usry “Many that we see are not abused themselves but taken from a home where the authorities have been called due to domestic violence.”
