The life of a kicker can be a lonely assignment, many times working by yourself to perfect your craft. Sometimes people do not even know your name or that you are a part of the team.
This statement could be less true of the Senior kicker/punter Eric Lemus, a young man with great character, from West Point High School. Lemus has played a vital role in the Green Wave football team starting since his Sophomore year for the varsity team as the kicker and punter. He has used his powerful leg to pin opponents deep on kickoffs, switch field position on punts, and knock in extra points and field goals.
“He [Eric Lemus] hits field goals, extra points, places punts,” commented Coach Chris Chambless when asked about Lemus, “he is a valuable weapon which helps expand our special teams immensely.”
Eric originally started playing football at the noseguard position due to his size. But Coach Chambless spotted his potential during the eighth grade to become a kicker and how it would benefit the Green Wave. Lemus’s background in soccer has helped him transition easily to kicking and punting the football.
Last week against Oxford, Lemus was perfect on extra points going five-for-five and kept Oxford’s average starting field position at the 20 yard line after punts and kickoffs. Many attribute Lemus’s success to his powerful leg. He had this to say;
“I work hard in the offseason and in-season,” said Eric Lemus, “I try to get on the field first and work hard before practice and during the special teams practice.”
Lemus has been able to angle his punts deep and away from returners which has placed many opponents deep in their own territory which helps the West Point defense keep the opposing offenses out of the end zone. After the Oxford game, Eric has made twenty nine straight successful extra points after five games. Also Eric up to this point in the season has made 95 percent of his extra points and made two field goals with a long of forty-four yards.
Lemus has enjoyed playing for the Green Wave and had this to say when asked about kicking at West Point High School.
“It is a great opportunity to be a part of this team,” commented Lemus, “Chambless has been like a father to me and everybody on this team.”
Lemus is hoping to walk-on at Mississippi State to kick and punt. He will pursue a major in Civil Engineering and understands he will have to work on the field and in the classroom. Eric is a rare talent that many Mississippi high school football coaches wished they have on their team. So the next time you attend a West Point football game, look for Eric Lemus, #14, and watch him put his talent on display as he and his teammates strive for another Green Wave victory.
