CANTON â€” Anna Evans scored a game-high 23 points, Victoria Sprayberry added 17 and the Leake Rebelletes capped their 12th straight MAIS Class-AA North Tournament title with a 72-29 win Saturday afternoon at Canton Academy.
Evans scored her first 13 points during the first half, and Sprayberry knocked down three of her first five 3-pointers during the second quarter. The combination of Evans and Sprayberry gave Leake a 21-point advantage by the break, 37-16.
â€śHonestly, I was not expecting today,â€ť Leake Head Coach Phil Sheppard said. â€śI was expecting a hard fight, and it was in the first quarter. We had a little bit of a struggle early. Once we got our lead into double digits, the pressure switch to (Oak Hill) to have to stay in the game.â€ť
The Rebelettes used two runs in the second quarter with an opening 6-0 run and a 9-0 run towards the end of the quarter. Along with Leakeâ€™s pair of runs, Oak Hill shot three of 23 from the field during the first half.
â€śThey really are close,â€ť Sheppard said. â€śThese girls have been together since the fourth-grade. They told me they wanted to win the overall at the beginning of the season. Thatâ€™s what we are trying to do now.â€ť
Leake pulled away for good with a 57-24, third-quarter lead. The fourth quarter was under a continuous clock as the Rebelettesâ€™ lead swelled over 35 points.
Sarah Dill led Oak Hill offensively with 11 points. The sophomore scored seven points in the opening eight minutes as the Lady Raiders only trailed, 14-9.
