The Lady Wave were on the road again Friday night, this time West Point headed south to take on the Louisville Lady Wildcats.
Head Coach Kendall Pickens and his Lady Wave gave a good team effort to start the game, but fell victim to a stingy Louisville defense allowing the Lady Wildcats to romp over West Point 72-33.
West Point’s Qiayon Bailey jump started the Lady Wave with the first basket of the game and the early lead. The Lady Wave were looking sharp, penetrating into the lane with great vision and passing. By the middle of the first quarter, Louisville had gained a minimal lead of 8-6. The Lady Wildcats picked up a few key stops and stretched their lead out to 15-11. Yet West Point’s Alexis Gates put in two great shots to bring the game level at 15 to close out the quarter.
In a second quarter the Lady Wave may want to forget very soon, the Lady Wildcats jumped all over West Point. A 15-0 Louisville run allowed the Lady Wildcats to control the game and gain a sizable 33-15 lead. The Lady Wildcats’ defense made it difficult for the Lady Wave to keep the ball in their possession leading to multiple turnovers and easy baskets for Louisville. At the halftime interval, the Lady Wildcats were up by double-digits 39-23.
The second half saw a repeat of the second quarter as the Lady Wildcats remained hot after the halftime break. And by the middle of the third quarter, the Lady Wave were on the unfortunate end of a 54-25 score. At the end of three, the Lady Wildcats were up 62-32.
As the game was too far out of reach to win for West Point, Coach Pickens made wholesale changes to the line-up allowing for some girls to pick up valuable minutes and game-time experience. Louisville remained dominant in the fourth quarter going on to close out the game and win 72-33.
In the scoring column for the Lady Wave were Bailey, Gates, Shamaya Lyles, and Lelsi Bean, all putting in 7 points. Also scoring were Hailey Dearing (3 points) and Alicia Witherspoon (2 points).
The Lady Wave will have to put this loss to Louisville in the past as on Tuesday, December 18, West Point opens up their district play on the road against Saltillo. An all-important game to decide District-Tournament seeding, the Lady Wave will hope to deliver a win back to West Point and open up the district campaign on the right note.
