The West Point Lady Green Wave (15-3; 2-1) are still fighting for that top spot atop the district after falling to the Oxford Lady Chargers last Friday night.
The Lady Wave began their rebound from that tough loss at home with a road win over the Lady Trojans of New Hope High School on Tuesday night.
West Point had a battle on its hands, but the girls managed to outlast New Hope in the 66-61 victory.
In the first period, the girls, led by Kelsei Ewings in scoring, jumped out to a slim 16-12 lead over the Lady Trojans.
New Hope immediately began to battle back in the second quarter, holding the Lady Wave to just nine points over the next eight minutes. Meanwhile, New Hope’s offense matched West Point’s first quarter scoring with 16 of its own, prior to the halftime break.
This gave the New Hope girls a slight three-point lead going into the third quarter.
In that third quarter, the defense for West Point continued to give up points, this time allowing 19 to the New Hope squad. West Point was able to keep pace with the Lady Trojans, scoring 15 points.
This gave New Hope a 47-40 lead going into the final period of the game.
West Point did not panic, and eventually, the offense came back to life, eventually putting up a game-high 26 points to finish the game. New Hope’s 18-point performance in the quarter, allowed West Point to tie, take the lead and climb up five points for the victory.
Ewings was the top scorer for West Point on the night, with 23 total points.
Wilma Davis also reach 20 points in the game. Nekeisha Walker scored 15 points and Taylor McCrary netted four for the Lady Wave.
West Point will take the court again tomorrow night, this time playing host to district rival Saltillo. The West Point girls defeated Saltillo in their first meeting back on December 17.
The West Point girls will have to play New Hope again next Tuesday night, this time at home.
On Thursday, they will face a tough rematch with the same Oxford team that defeated them last Friday. That is a makeup game from January 11.
The next night, West Point will travel to Noxubee County for the final regular season game.
On February 8 and 11, the Lady Wave and the Green Wave boys team will host the district tournament.
