Lady Wave pick up first win

November 17, 2012

After losing Tuesday night to Hamilton, West Point’s Lady Wave returned to the court to take on the Amory Lady Panthers Thursday night. In a game that West Point led in every quarter, the Lady Wave showed improved ability going on to win 54-38.
Coach Kendall Pickens understands that this was an important first win for his team and knows that it can be difficult to get that first win sometimes.
“We just tried to keep our tempo,” said Coach Pickens after the victory, “and we just had to do the little things so we could get the win.”
The Lady Wave used a 16-12 first quarter lead to stay ahead of Amory. A back and forth second allowed West Point to keep their four point lead, ending the first half 28-24.
The Lady Wave opened up the third quarter with a 9-1 run setting up West Point for further success in the second half. The score at the end of the quarter read 39-28. West Point continued their control of the game in the fourth quarter as the Lady Wave furthered their lead over the Lady Panthers. At the end of the game, West Point definitely was the better team and it showed on the scoreboard with a Lady Wave win, 54-38.
The Lady Wave used a slower tempo and controlled their offensive half-court game. The slower tempo gave the Lady Wave better focus and fewer turnovers on the night. Also the tempo set up Qiayan Bailey who led the Lady Wave with an excellent night on the court. Bailey had 32 points and 11 rebounds, showing her ability to play in the front and back court and being able to score.
“[Qiayan] Bailey is strong, she has to be on the floor,” commented Coach Pickens on Bailey’s performance, “when she gets going, she gets everybody else going as well.”
Also helping the West Point offense was Shaerica Moore, Brittnie White, and Alicia Witherspoon all contributing five points on the night.
West Point feels this will be the win that boosts confidence and gets their spirits high. The Lady Wave will stay in West Point to take on Kemper County, Monday November 19. Tip-off is set for 6:00 for the Girls’ Varsity game.
