It’s going to be a battle between two greats in 5A girls basketball tonight, and it’s going to be right here in West Point. The Lady Wave (14-2; 1-0) and the Lady Chargers of Oxford High School (16-2; 2-0) are going head to head for first place in the district.
Both teams enter tonight’s play with just two losses. The West Point girls have played only one district game, a win over Saltillo on December 17. The Lady Chargers have taken care of Saltillo and New Hope to stand alone on top of the district standings.
Tonight, the home girls are looking to establish themselves as the best in the league and help secure a top seed for the upcoming district tournament.
“It’s a big game,” said West Point head coach Jemmye Ann Helms. “These kids have worked hard. We try to do a good job of preparing, and I’m proud of what they’ve done.”
The West Point girls are currently riding high on a 13-game winning streak, including a Tuesday home win over Starkville. During that win streak, they have claimed on district win and two first-place tournament trophies.
They will put it all on the line against a capable Lady Charger team that started the season with a 10-game winning streak.
The Oxford girls fell to Grenada on December 11, and they proceeded to win six more in a row, before falling to Laffayette on Tuesday night by a score of 55-50.
West Point’s girls have not lost a game since they fell in back-to-back contests against Houston and Tupelo in the middle of November, to start the season with a 2-2 mark.
After tonight’s game with Oxford, the Lady Green Wave will have to face off against New Hope, at their place, next week. They will host Saltillo the following Friday.
In early February, they will make up the game they missed with Oxford last week, due to the winter storm, and they will host New Hope and travel to Noxubee to end the season.
After that, West Point will play host at the district tournament, starting on February 8.
The Lady Green Wave will start all of tonight’s basketball play with a tip-off at 6 p.m.
The boys game will follow immediately after that.
