The Lady Wave took on the Noxubee County Tigerettes Tuesday night in West Point. West Point had a poor first half, but a better second half saw the Lady Wave fight back into the game. West Point was never able to close the Noxubee lead past 6 and fell to the Tigerettes 59-51.
The Lady Wave had a good start to the game as Qiayon Bailey and Shamaya Lyles combined for nine points and led West Point to an early 9-8 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Tigerettes open the quarter with a 16-2 stretch that was not ended until the 3:30 mark. It was the Noxubee full court press which sunk West Point’s chances in the quarter. The Lady Wave’s multiple turnovers allowed Noxubee to take the lead and never look back. At halftime, it was Noxubee ahead 28-19.
West Point opened up the second half with the first basket, and fought hard during the third quarter. Though falling behind the Tigerettes by double digits, the Lady Wave got hot toward the end of the quarter and were only behind 45-37. The fourth quarter was very frantic and up-tempo, both teams brought physicality to the quarter. Noxubee opened up with a 7-2 run extending their lead out to thirteen. The Lady Wave answered the run with two Lyles’ three pointers to bring the game within six points later in the quarter. But the Tigerettes were able to keep West Point at bay and close out the game with a 58-51 win.
Bailey led the scoring column again as she continues her great performances on the court with 18 points. Also leading the scoring column were Lyles (12 points), Alicia Witherspoon (8 points), and Raven Powell (7 points).
The Lady Wave suffered another loss on their record, but it is too early in the season for West Point to start getting worried. Head Coach Kendall Pickens and his Lady Wave will be prepared as district play will soon be coming around the corner. West Point returns to the court Friday night when they make their first true road trip to near neighbor Aberdeen. Game time is set to tip off between the Lady Wave and Lady Bulldogs at 6 o’clock.
