The West Point Green Wave girls golf team will travel to Holly Springs Monday and Tuesday to compete for a 5A state championship in golf. The Green Wave are coached by Brad Cox and Rachel Pate.
“Rachel Pate is our volunteer golf coach,” Cox said. “She knows a lot about the game and spends a lot of time with our girls. She really helps them with scholarship opportunities and is just an awesome coach.”
The three girls competing in state are Synethia Matthews, Ashley Johnson and Angelica Colbert.
Cox said Matthews is a great athlete who hits the ball well and enjoys the game.
“This is her first year playing golf,” Cox said. “She’s only an eighth-grader, so she’s going to take some time to develop, but we think she’s going to be really good.
“Ashley finished second in district with her individual score,” Cox added. “She hits the ball straight as an arrow, and is really talented. She has finished in the top two in district the past two years and really helped carry us last year. Angelica is real strong and has really come around the past couple of years. She has been working on her short game, and had a real good day of golf at the district meet in which our team finished second. So we are hoping to shoot a very competitive score in the state meet.”
