Lady Wave falls to Houston in early-week battle

February 9, 2013

The West Point Lady Wave basketball team traveled north on Tuesday night to take on the Houston Lady Hilltoppers in a non-district game.
West Point was coming off a bruising district loss on Monday to the hands of the Lady Chargers of Oxford 62-20.
On Tuesday, the Lady Wave tried to put their best foot forward in an attempt to rebound against the Lady Toppers. Keeping the game close throughout the contest, West Point took a 20-16 lead into halftime. The Lady Wave lead did not last though as Houston used a 14-6 stretch at the close of the third quarter to overtake West Point 38-30 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Toppers were able to hold on to the victory, winning 53-47.
In the first period of play, Houston opened up the scoring to take an early 2-0 lead over the Lady Wave. West Point’s Shamaya Lyles though had the answer for the Lady Toppers, tying the game back up 2-2 at the 6:17 mark. Both teams sought a rhythm and dominance in the first as there were 4 lead changes and 3 ties during the quarter. Houston clinched a slim margin at the close of the first leading 8-6 over the Lady Wave.
West Point though soon found an answer after the break as Alexis Gates started the scoring for the Lady Wave in the second quarter. Knocking down 2 baskets, Gates brought West Point within one-point 11-10 with 5:53 left in the first half. Soon multiple players for the Lady Wave started to contribute offensively with Qiayon Bailey finishing the second period West Point scoring, giving the Lady Wave a 20-16 lead at the halftime interval.
The second half belonged to the Lady Toppers as Houston outscored the Lady Wave 20-10 in the third quarter. The energy of the crowd and turnovers by West Point allowed Houston to take the 38-30 lead into the final quarter.
The Lady Wave attempted to claw back into the game and overcome the eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. West Point used a 7-2 run to only trail Houston 43-37 with 4:33 left in the contest. Yet the Lady Toppers seemed unfazed by the West Point comeback as Houston pulled away to close out the game. Even with a last grasp at tying the game, the Lady Wave fell to the hands of Houston 53-47.
West Point’s leading scorer on the night was Bailey with 24 points, 20 of those points came during the second half of play. Gates contributed with 8 points, the second highest for the Lady Wave. Lyles and Alicia Witherspoon finished the night on 4 points to round out the top scorers for West Point.
The Lady Wave will enter into district 2 5-A tournament play taking on the number two seeded Oxford Chargers. West Point will open the slate of games on Tuesday with tip-off set for 4 o’clock at New Hope High School.
