West Point Lady Wave senior Kelsei Ewings earned her title as All-District Tournament Player on Friday night, as she helped lead her team to a 69-54 win over the Oxford Lady Chargers. The Lady Wave will now host the first round of the North State Tournament tomorrow night.
“We played hard and aggressive the entire time,” said West Point head coach Jemmye Ann Helms. “Up at Oxford, we played aggressive, but we made mental mistakes late in the game. Tonight, we jumped in on them early, and pressured the players we could, and we contained the ones who were quick to the bucket.”
Ewings scored 38 points for West Point, against Oxford, defeating a Lady Chargers team that had beaten West Point twice before this season.
In the first quarter, the Lady Wave did a good job of spreading the ball around, getting shots from Taylor McCrary and Nekeisha Walker.
Those two, along with Ewings continued to dazzle the Oxford defense over the next two quarters. West Point escaped the first, trailing 14-13.
In the second, however, it was the Lady Wave offense and defense that dominated. West Point scored 16 points over the next eight minutes, and they allowed just six to the the Lady Chargers, leaving the Lady Wave up 29-20 at the end of the first half.
The third quarter brought more of the same for the Lady Chargers, who were stunned by the West Point team’s 21 points over the next eight minutes. Oxford only managed a dozen in the net.
This left West Point leading 50-32 going into the final quarter of regulation.
Ewings would put up eight points in the final period, and despite the defense giving up 22 points, West Point still emerged with the 15-point win.
West Point will welcome a powerhouse, in Indianola-Gentry, on Valentine’s day.
“They are always good, and they will always be good,” Helms said. “They’re as aggressive and athletic as always, but it will be a good and a tough game. If my kids come out and play hard and physical, and not back down from them, I think we can give them a good game.”
Tomorrow night’s game will start at 7 p.m.
