Lady Raiders top Kirk in overtime, 47-45

November 11, 2011

For a few minutes late in the fourth quarter, Oak Hill girls basketball coach Stan Hughey got a little nervous. He watched as the Lady Raiders, who led 36-24 heading into the final period, allowed Kirk to comeback and send it into overtime.

Five points in the last minute of OT by the Lady Raiders, including the go ahead jumper by Maegen Ellis, gave Oak Hill the victory, 47-45 in their home debut.

“The pressure got to us,” Hughey said. “They switched up the way they were guarding us. We turned the ball over a lot and just really got nervous. But the girls made plays. Kirk’s a really good team.”

Oak Hill, (3-1), looking for their third straight victory since their season opening loss to Class AAA Jackson Academy, had a slim two point lead after the opening quarter. A 5-0 run to start the second stretched the lead to 17-12 with a little over five minutes until the half. The Lady Raiders just couldn’t find away to pad the cushion a little more as Kirk hung around for the rest of the quarter, but were still down by eight at the break 27-19.

The girls knew that wasn’t their best first half performance, and so did Hughey.

“When we got to halftime, I looked at them and they were really pale looking,” he said. “I told them ‘that’s over with, we can’t do anything about it now’. When I was talking to them, I literally could see color coming back in their faces. They just refuse to lose. They showed a lot of heart, a lot of desire.”

Complete recap will be in the Sunday edition.
