The Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders (1-0) got to shake off the rust on Monday night, playing the first in a series of three games at the Indianola Tournament.
Surviving some first game jitters in the opening half, the Lady Raiders rallied past Marvel Academy 35-25.
“We were too hyped up early,” said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey. “We got to missing shots and lost a little confidence.”
The Lady Raiders were shutout completely in the first quarter, leaving the opening period down 4-0 to Marvel.
At the end of the half, they had rallied to within three, trailing 12-9.
Hughey said that the girls stepped up their defensive intensity after the half, holding the Arkansas team to just 13 points over the next two quarters.
The 26 points scored by the Lady Raiders in the second half was enough get them past Marvel.
Hughey said that the win was good, but the team had some shooting problems they will have to work on, as they get ready for North Delta on Saturday.
The Lady Raiders shot 7-for-20 from the free throw line.
In the first half, they shot 4-for-21 from the floor, following that up with an 8-for-27 performance in the second half.
Defensively, the girls stepped it up and rebounded late in the game.
“We played really good defense,” Hughey said. “We went to a full-court man press in the second half, and they had a hard time getting it in.”
The Lady Raiders, who played Strider yesterday evening, will play at Indianola again on Saturday against North Delta. They will play Lamar on the road Tuesday night as well.
