The Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders are less than a week out from playing their first district game of 2011. Already with a 3-0 record in district play, the Lady Raiders will be looking to shake off any rust that accumulated during the break, this week, at the Kirk Academy Tournament in Grenada.
âWeâre trying to look at this tourney as a way to get back going,â said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey on Tuesday.
The girls will play their first game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon against a very solid Pillow Academy girls team. That game will start at 4:15.
If the girls win, they will play on Friday and Saturday. In the event of a Thursday loss, they will return to play a consolation game on Saturday.
The Lady Raiders finished out the 2010 portion of the regular season in fine fashion, winning their final nine games before the break. Those wins included three district victories against Winston, Manchester and Carroll.
âWe did need a break, as far as getting away from it for a little while,â Hughey said. âWeâve had a couple of really good practices and put a few new plays in.â
Hughey says that the team is relatively healthy going into Thursdayâs game. In the first part of the season, Paige Dawkins was recovering from an injury she sustained in softball. She has returned healthy, however, and contributed a lot to the Lady Raidersâ inside game in the last three weeks of 2010.
Tori Ellis has been Oak Hillâs leading scoring player all season, putting up 20 or more points consistently throughout the season.
On Thursday, the girls will play a similar team to their own in Pillow.
âWe play a really good team,â said Hughey. âTheyâre going to press a lot, and theyâre going to play man-to-man.â
Next Tuesday, the Lady Raiders will get district play back started again against Winston, at home.
