Lady Raiders fall short in loss to top-ranked Lady Vols

November 20, 2012

The Lady Raiders came close, but were not able to knock their rival Starkville Academy from the top spot in the rankings. In an incredible rally, Oak Hill nearly upset the Lady Volunteers in an electric Monday night game that resulted in a 58-52 loss for the Lady Raiders.
The first half of the competition was frustrating for fans to watch. The Lady Raiders were sturggling from the field and the Lady Vols could not miss. After a lethargic opening half, Oak Hill headed to the locker room trailing 37-17.
In the third quarter, the competition was dead even. The game was played at a balanced pace and both teams traded buckets for the duration of the quarter. After the end of the quarter, the score was 51-32 in favor of Starkville.
Suddenly, Oak Hill caught heat and took complete control of the game. The Lady Raiders came within four points before forced fouls to stop the clock were converted into made freebies by the Lady Vols. In a 20-7 quarter for the Lady Raiders, they fell just short of the upset.
Maegen Ellis and Sarah Dill were the leading scorers for Oak Hill, finishing with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Anna Ready put up nine points. Lauren Billington and Rachel Herndon scored six and five points, while Shay Atkins poured in four. Kelci Jo Langford rounded out the scoring with a pair of points.
The Lady Raiders fall to 6-1 and will take on Heritage Academy in a rematch on the road next Tuesday with junior high action beginning at 4 p.m.
