Lady Raiders fall to Prairie View 55-45

February 25, 2013

It was a rematch of the AA North State Tournament semi-final as the Oak Hill Lady Raiders met up with Prairie View Academy again this past Saturday. In the previous meeting, the Lady Raiders used a second half rally to overcome a 12-point deficit to defeat the Lady Spartans 55-50.
In the Saturday afternoon AA State consolation game, Prairie View seemed in charge of the game from the start. After leading 10-8 at the close of the first period, the Lady Spartans used two runs of 9-0 and 8-2 to extend their lead over Oak Hill 33-22 by the halftime intermission. It did not get any better for the Lady Raiders as Prairie View was able to capitalize on the shooting woes of Oak Hill on their way to victory 55-45.
“We didn’t have a good first half,” said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey, “the second quarter was just mental mistakes, and we really were not into the game.”
Many of the woes for Oak Hill came from the free throw line. The Lady Raiders had a difficult time converting from the charity stripe especially in the first quarter going three of eight on free throws. Another hiccup Oak Hill faced was multiple unforced and forced turnovers which left them with less opportunities on offense.
“Free throws and turnovers were our achilles heel all season,” commented Coach Hughey about the mistakes during the first half.
During the first period of play, Prairie View opened the scoring and took an early 2-0 lead fourteen seconds into the game. The Lady Raiders answered though with an 8-2 run to take an 8-4 lead by the 2:58 mark of the quarter. The Lady Spartans though changed the momentum with a 6-0 stretch to put themselves in the lead 10-8 at the finish of the first.
Prairie View soon found themselves in the driving seat as the Lady Raiders gave too many turnovers in the second quarter. After Oak Hill tied the game at the 6:26 mark 12-12, the Lady Spartans knocked down a three-pointer and went on a 9-0 run to put themselves into control 21-12 with 4:27 left in the half. The Lady Raiders seemed to have no answer for Prairie View as the Lady Spartans outscored Oak Hill 12-10 before entering into halftime.
Unlike the last meeting, Oak Hill did not have an answer for the 11-point deficit that sat before them. The Lady Raiders were able to close down the double digit deficit to 40-32 by the end of the third period. Even with the third period rally, Oak Hill could not eliminate the 11-point halftime deficit. The Lady Spartans used eight free throws to keep Oak Hill at bay as the Lady Raiders made a final charge during the fourth quarter. The Lady Spartans hung on for the win and berth in the MAIS Overall Tournament 55-45.
With the loss to Prairie View, the Lady Raiders ended their season 30-9. Oak Hill fell one game short of making the Overall Tournament. The Lady Raiders will lose four seniors this year but will hope that the remaining underclassmen will be ready to play this upcoming November.
