Lady Raiders fall to JA in Canton tourney

November 3, 2011

CANTON - Oak Hill Academy were out-muscled and at times struggled defensively as they dropped their first game of the 2011-12 season Wednesday afternoon, 47-39 to the reigning MAIS Class AAA champions Jackson Academy.

"We just didn't play well enough to win," head coach Stan Hughey said. "It's a tough loss, I thought we really had a chance to play with them."

Junior Anna Ready paced the girls with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals in the loss, She was perfect from the free-thow line going 8-for-8. Tori Ellis and Shay Atkins each finished with eight points apiece and Atkins grabbed a team-high eight boards. Rachel Herndon rounded out the top scorers with four.

Up next for Oak Hill is a rematch with Simpson Academy on Saturday. Last season, a 46-40 win over the Cougars solidified a trip to the state championships for the Lady Raiders. A playoff berth isn't on the line, but Hughey says a victory will get them on the right side of the track.
