CANTON – A lesson of perseverance was learned Friday night.
The Oak Hill Lady Raiders claimed a 58-54 win over the Winston Lady Patriots in a MAIS Class-AA North tournament semi-final at Canton Academy.
“About a week ago, it seemed like Winston had our number, but we got the one that counted,” Oak Hill Head Coach Stan Hughey said.
The Lady Raiders lost their first three prior meetings with the Lady Patriots, but sophomore Sarah Dill was not worried about the past as she scored seven points in the fourth quarter to finish with a game-high 20 points.
“We were very into the game,” Dill said. “We wanted to win and we were ready to win. It was just a focus on tonight’s game.”
Oak Hill led by as much as eight points in the final quarter but did not trail Winston. After Winston’s Marianne Ward’s two-point make brought the deficit within one point, Tanner Grubbs knocked down a transition lay-up with an assist from Sydney Holton to finish with 15 points, and the Lady Raiders added four free throws by the 13-second mark, 58-51.
“We didn’t have any pressure on us,” Oak Hill senior point guard Maegan Ellis said. “We played really well in the quarterfinal, and we played really good again today. It is really exciting to play against Leake.”
