Lady Eagles win at home, defeat Veritas 56-54

November 16, 2011

The Hebron Lady Eagles picked up their fourth of the season Tuesday night, but it wasn’t easy by any means.

A run late in the fourth quarter gave the girls a seven point lead and enough to hold on for a 56-54 win over Veritas. It was the second victory in the last three games for the Lady Eagles.

Tori Nichols, who finished with 27 points and five blocks, fouled out in the fourth, but the Hebron bench stepped up and held on to the lead. The girls shot 60 percent from the free-throw line in the ball game, with several coming down the stretch.

Head coach William Cotton says they’re doing more and more free throws every day in practice and hopefully, that will start to payoff.

With a two-point lead after the first quarter, the Lady Eagles stretched the deficit to 14 points in the second before Veritas made a comeback of their own and trailed by two at the half, 28-26.
Cotton said the girls have really struggled to get on the same page this season, but that changed Tuesday.

“I felt like everything came together,” he said. “Everybody knew where they were supposed to be and what they were supposed to do. I just saw some improvement in them that I needed to see.

Alaina Hill finished with 16 in the win, with Beverly Blake and Ruth Foster topping out with five.

With seven games left until the break, Cotton said it’s going to be important to make a run before Christmas.

“If we keep working like we’ve been working, we can be 7-0 or 6-1 over that stretch,” he said. “The big thing is whether or not we keep working together like a team like we did last night. If we can continue to work together and things click, I think we can them.”

The junior varsity girls also earned their fourth win on the season, 41-28.

The Lady Eagles outscored Veritas 27-6 in the second and third quarters to help them earn the win at home. Victoria Ferguson led the girls with 16 points while Holly Hudson knocked down 10.
