The Lady Eagle basketball program is coming off a big junior high district tournament this past weekend and hope that the success carries over into this coming weekend.
Hebron Christian is a very young ball club with four starters still in junior high, but under the direction of head coach William Cotton have played great basketball in the month of January. Last weekâs junior high tournament championship gave the junior high girls much needed experience playing in a tournament atmosphere.
âWe played a close game in the first round [of the junior high tournament],â said Coach Cotton about his Lady Eagles gaining tournament experience last week, âwe also got behind in the championship game and rallied to win. The girls have responded well to the tournament pressure.â
Starting tonight, Hebron Christian will open their postseason play against the Kemper Academy Lady Rams.
âIt is a must win against Kemper, not only for a chance at a district championship, but also for a chance for better seeding at the next tournament,â said Cotton about the importance of the first round game.
In the previous two meetings, the Lady Eagles and Lady Rams have split both games by on an average deficit of 1 and 1/2 points. With scores of 42-41 Hebron and 46-44 Kemper, the games have been very tight in the two meetings. Coach Cotton though predicts that will not be the story this time around.
âI donât think it will be a two-point ball game,â commented Cotton, âsomeone, either us or them, is going to pull away at some point in the game.â
The Lady Eagles have not faltered since January 11 and hope they can continue their winning ways in the district 3-A tournament. Game time is set for 7:00 at Woods Junior College in Mathiston.
