It all came down to the final minute of play between Hebron Christian and Victory Christian in Pheba Tuesday night. A Subrina Oswalt go-ahead basket with only seven seconds left seemed to clinch the Lady Eagle win, but Victory Christian had other plans in mind. Victory, after a timeout, inbounded the ball from their baseline, drove down the court, and hit a 25 foot shot as the game clock expired to defeat Hebron 40-39.
This Tuesday contest for the Lady Eagles was the first game since November 13, when Hebron beat Grace Christian of Louisville. The two week hiatus did not seem to play too much of a factor in the play of Hebron as Coach William Cotton had his girls ready to compete against Victory.
The Lady Eagles started the game well in the first quarter as they took a 6-4 lead midway through the quarter. The game plan was simple for Hebron; get the ball down low to Victoria Ferguson and by the end of the quarter the Lady Eagles led over Victory 13-9. Yet Victory answered the Lady Eagles’ first quarter with a good second quarter of their own. Victory was able to take the lead right before halftime and outscored Hebron 14-9 in the quarter. At halftime, Victory Christian was on top of Hebron 23-22.
The Lady Eagles came back on the court after halftime and nearly dominated the whole third quarter as Hebron went on a 6-1 run to regain the lead 28-24 at the four minute mark. The score would soon be brought back even as Victory clawed their way back into the ball game and at the end of the quarter it was tied at 33. The Lady Eagles were in foul trouble though as Ferguson and Rebekah Falkner each picked up their fourth fouls in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a tight affair; both teams had difficulty scoring from the floor. Hebron also found it difficult playing with Ferguson and Falkner on the bench prolonging their foul trouble. After returning to the game, Ferguson and Falkner eventually fouled out, but before Falkner fouled out she was able to contribute with a game tying lay-up with one minute remaining. The last minute was hectic but unfortunately the Lady Eagles’ Brooke Ferguson missed two crucial free throws with 30 seconds in the game. But Oswalt seemingly erased that when she scored the go-ahead bucket for Hebron making the score 39-37. Yet Victory was able to drive down the floor with seven seconds left and hit the game winning three-pointer ending the game with a score of 40-39.
Ferguson led the scoring column for the Lady Eagles with 9 points. Oswalt, Falkner, and Holly Hudson contributed each with 8 points. Also scoring on the night was Griffin with 4 points and Millie Hudson 2 points.
Though the loss to Victory was a tough one, the Lady Eagles will take a few valuable lessons from Tuesday night. One being staying out of foul trouble and secondly the importance of free throws. Hebron will need a short memory as they open district play Thursday night hosting Winona Christian November 29. Girls’ Varsity is set to tip-off around 6 o’clock.
