Lady Eagles going through a learning curve

November 8, 2012

The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles returned home after their 65-27 loss Monday to the hands of Veritas School of Jackson, Mississippi. Rebekah Falkner led the way for the Lady Eagles in Monday’s defeat with fourteen points. On Tuesday night in Pheba, the Lady Eagles played host to the Lady Patriots of Winston Academy. The Lady Eagles showed a great amount of heart and no quit effort in the game though trailing throughout. Unfortunately, the ladies of Hebron Christian found themselves at the wrong end of the Winston Academy route, losing 70-25.
“We are young,” stated Coach William Cotton about his Lady Eagles.
A Winston Academy full court press caused multiple turnovers by the Lady Eagles allowing the Lady Patriots to take a fourteen point lead after the first quarter, 25-11. Winston Academy remained dominant in the second quarter, but the Lady Eagles fought throughout showing the drive they have to succeed. The score at half time read in favor of the Lady Patriots, 45-18. After a second half of play, the Lady Eagles lost to Winston Academy 70-25.
Falkner and Victoria Ferguson led the Hebron Christian offense with 7 points each against Winston Academy. Also scoring Tuesday night were Brooke Griffin (6 points), Holly Hudson (4 points), and Subrina Oswalt (1 point).
The Lady Eagles are a very young team, only starting one high school starter in point guard Oswalt. The rest of the starting five consist of one freshman and three eighth graders, all four who play two quarters of junior varsity before starting in the varsity game. Coach Cotton knows these girls have many years of basketball in front of them, and they will grow into better ball players with experience.
The Lady Eagles return to the court Friday night when they take on Immanuel from Columbus at home. Hebron Christian has already defeated Immanuel in preseason play, but Coach Cotton hopes to keep his girls focused on the task at hand. And that task is bouncing back from these two losses and getting the first win Friday night.
“We lost the game, we just need to shake it off,” said Coach Cotton about moving forward, “and get ready for the next one.”
