The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles (8-0; 1-0) have been on a tear to start the 2010-2011 season. Thought they did not have their best scoring games last Thursday and Friday, they did walk away with two more wins, including their first district victory against Winona.
They defeated Winston on Thursday in 49-45 contest, and they got the Friday night win over the Lady Stars 42-25.
“It was a big game for us,” said Hebron head coach Greg Watkins of the Friday night win. “If there’s anything we have to improve on, it’s defense. I feel pretty good about our offense. We just two bad shooting games in a row.”
On Thursday night, the Lady Eagles missed 19 free throw attempts, but they overcame that statistic to win over Winston.
In the first quarter, Tori Nichols led the offense to a 17-point period, while the defense held Winston to just nine points. Things were dead even in the second, as both teams came away with eight points, but Hebron still had the lead at the half.
When the two teams returned to the floor, things were neck and neck once again. The Lady Eagles barely out-scored their opponent 15-14 in the third. Things got even more scary in the fourth, when Winston had 14 points again, holding Hebron to just nine, but that still left Winston with a four-point deficit when the final buzzer rang.
Nichols led the offense with 17 points on the night. Cathryn Moore was right behind her with 14 points. Hillary Arnold scored seven points for Hebron.
The next night, the Lady Eagles were at home again, this time facing a much more important foe, a district rival.
The Lady Eagles opened up league play in fine fashion, playing another solid defensive match.
They held the Lady Stars to just four points in the first half, taking a 14-4 lead into the locker room.
In the third and fourth quarters, the Lady Eagle offense came to life for 27 points, while holding the Lady Stars to 21 points.
Nichols repeated her pervious night’s scoring with 17 more points. Moore was second again, this time with 11 points. Magen Tapley scored six points for Hebron on the evening.
The Lady Eagles will have Thanksgiving week off, returning to the court again, at Starkville Christian, on November 29.
