Lady Eagles fall to Winona

December 1, 2012

In the opening game of the MAIS Classification A District 3 games, Hebron Christian played host to Winona Christian on Thursday. Head Coach William Cotton was absent due to an illness, leaving the Lady Eagles under the direction of Assistant Coach MP.
The Lady Eagles stayed competitive with Winona only trailing the Lady Stars by 5 points at halftime. The second half was a different story as Hebron was unable to cope with Winona’s full court press and were routed 56-28.
The first quarter witnessed three lead changes and one tie as the Lady Eagles and Lady Stars battled hard during the quarter. Hebron was up 9-6, but turnovers hurt the Lady Eagles allowing for the Lady Stars to have a 7-0 run closing out the quarter 13-9. Both teams began to see foul trouble in the second quarter, as at least two players from each team entered into their third fouls. Hebron kept it close though in the quarter cutting the lead within one, 16-15, at the 4:30 mark. But Winona Christian once again, finished out the quarter with a strong 9-4 scoring stretch. The halftime score favored the visiting Winona Christian 24-19.
The Lady Stars just seemed the better team on the night; Winona took an 8-2 scoring stretch to start the third quarter. After a long Hebron scoring drought during the quarter, it was Rebekah Joy Falkner leading the Lady Eagles scoring 7 points ending the quarter with Winona still leading 34-28. Falkner having a career night fouled out in the fourth quarter leaving the Lady Eagles without a true scoring threat. Winona went on to blank Hebron in the quarter and finished the game with a 56-28 win.
Though the Lady Eagles were on the wrong end of the scoreboard, Falkner had a highlight night scoring 23 points putting on a spectacular display on offense. Also scoring on the night were Subrina Oswalt, Hollie Hudson, and Brooke Griffin all with two points.
Hebron suffered their first district loss and will have to recover some wins in the remaining district games. The Lady Eagles are meshing together as a team and are learning valuable lessons as any young team will during a season. Hebron will travel away from Pheba Tuesday December 4 to take on District 3 rival Calhoun Academy in Calhoun City. Girls’ Varsity tip-off is set for around 6 o’clock.
