The Lady Eagles of Hebron made the short journey over to Columbus to face Victory Christian. Back in November, the Lady Eagles hosted Victory in Pheba and were defeated on a buzzer-beating three pointer, 39-38. This time around it was major foul trouble which hampered Hebron Christian as Victory Christian pulled away in the fourth quarter, winning 53-43.
“I thought we played well enough to win tonight,” said Head Coach William Cotton, “it is just hard to win on an opponent’s court sometimes.”
The game’s first bucket came from Hebron’s Rebekah Falkner giving the Lady Eagles an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter. After trading buckets, the Lady Eagles and Victory were deadlocked at the midway point of the quarter 6-6. Both teams were struggling to find a rhythm as Hebron’s turnovers killed their offensive production, but Victory on the other end of the court could not make any shots under the basket. At the end of the first it was all tied at 10.
Hebron Christian came out hot in the second quarter going on a 9-1 scoring stretch to gain a decisive lead. During the stretch, the Lady Eagles played tight on defense and shot well from the floor. Victory though came roaring back into the quarter outscoring Hebron 7-4 to close out the half. Hebron survived the stretch though and still led 23-19 at halftime.
An up-tempo third quarter saw the Lady Eagles remain in the lead through the middle of quarter, 30-27. But foul-trouble began to play a major role in the game as Falkner and Victoria Ferguson both picked up their fourth fouls toward the end of the quarter which allowed for Victory to scratch their way back into the game. At the end of three, it was again deadlocked at 34.
An Achilles heel for the Lady Eagles all season, foul trouble played a huge role in the fourth quarter. Hebron was living on the edge with four girls in major foul trouble. Early in the fourth, Ferguson fouled out and not soon after it was Hollie Hudson picking up her fifth foul. The Lady Eagles’ foul trouble gave Victory the opportunity to gain control which they did 42-40 with about four minutes left in the game. With a decimated line-up, Hebron could not keep up with Victory who went on to win 53-43.
Scoring for the Lady Eagles was Falkner with 17 points, Subrina Oswalt putting in 10 points, Hollie Hudson contributing 7 points, Brooke Griffin with 5 points, and Ferguson with 4 points.
Hebron’s foul trouble decided the game Thursday night. The Lady Eagles put forth a great team effort against Victory but were on the wrong end of some calls. Coach Cotton and his Lady Eagles have shown much in improvement in the span of 16 games and will hope to close out their last seven games in January on a positive note.
