Kirk scores 21-unanswered points to top Oak Hill

October 22, 2011

GRENADA - A first half touchdown by freshman tailback Drake Riley wasn’t enough to give Oak Hill it’s first win on the season, as the Raiders stumbled on the road, 21-6 to Kirk Academy.

The loss is the ninth in a row for the Raiders who scored just their second touchdown in the last three weeks.
Looking to convert on fourth down in the second quarter, Kirk tired a little trickery with a fake punt only to be snuffed out by the Raiders defense.

One play later and Riley sprinted 38-yards down field for the score and give Oak Hill a 6-0 lead after the failed extra point. The Raiders couldn’t extend the lead as time expire in the first half.

“The younger kids stepped up and played really well for us,” head coach Benjie Merchant said. “We played real well in the first half, but in the second we just made the mistakes we’ve been doing all season.”

Missed tackles and blocks have plagued the Raiders all season, especially giving up the big plays.

Kirk had two big touchdown runs by Chase Carver, 25 and 46 down the stretch to put the game out of reach. Quarterback Cade Moody gave Kirk
their first lead of the game with a short keeper.

Several times, Oak Hill would get a drive going only to stall, not picking up enough yards on crucial situations.

After seeing a few sparks from the freshman class Friday night, Merchant knows the Raiders will eventually find a formula to try and turn things around before the season ends.

“Just having more skill ability, and having a longer amount of time to
work with my lineman, we’re going to get better,” he said. “We just have to work on getting players out and doing the little things you have to do.”

The Raiders close out the season at home against Immanuel (1-8) who are coming off a 42-14 loss to Winston.

"We're going to do our best," Merchant said. "There's a big difference between 1-9 and 0-10"
