Entertainer Inky the Clown will be the opening act at 2 p.m. today for the Summer Reading Program at the Bryan Public Library in West Point. The theme is: Fizz, Boom, Read.
For more than 10 years, Inky the Clown has brought his unique brand of humor to delight young and old during the SRP.
“We are always happy to welcome Inky the Clown to the library,” said Dawn Richardson, children’s librarian at the BPL. “Every year we break the previous attendance record during Inky’s performance. We would also like to ask parents and child care facilities to arrive a little before 2 p.m. to get everyone seated before Inky starts the show.”
Richardson said more than 250 children are expected to attend the debut of the SRP for 2014.
In addition to the SRP, the BPL is offering Music Time with Miss Hannah from 9-9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July to correspond with the reading program. This is a new program for ages 6-12, Richardson said.
“I want to help children learn to love music,” said Hannah Garbutt, music teacher for Music Time with Miss Hannah. “We want to teach basic music comprehension that isn’t taught at school. It will be something of an experiment this year. If we get a good response this summer, we’ll consider offering the classes again next year.”
Entertainers will perform at the SRP on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons are Movie Time, according to Richardson.
SRP attendees can also enjoy local art on display, Richardson said.
“The Esther Pippin Room where the SRP is held is full of artwork from Oak Hill Academy pre-k through fifth grade on display,” Richardson said. “We hope the children enjoy the art and we want to invite everyone to come and see the art displays. Some of the art has won awards, and all will be entered in the youth art competition during the Prairie Arts Festival in September.”
