No one has been scoring off the Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders (18-6; 5-0) lately. The Heritage Academy girls were no exception on Monday night, as they fell while hosting Oak Hill 52-33.
“We played really hard and really smart,” said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey.
Heritage’s top player, Rachel Hollivay, was shut down by the Oak Hill defense that allowed the college recruit just 10 points on the night.
Tori Ellis, Oak Hill’s top scorer this season, scored the first 10 points of the game for the Lady Raiders. Two minutes in, Ellis had mounted a sizable lead for her team that eventually grew to an 18-3 deficit for the Heritage Lady Raiders before the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Heritage made a bit of a comeback, scoring 16 points to Oak Hill’s dozen in the net. This left the visiting Lady Raiders with a 30-19 lead going into the half.
In the third quarter, Oak Hill came out firing again, but Heritage matched the girls shot-for-shot. The two teams both came out of the period with 11 points each, sending them into the fourth quarter with Oak Hill on top 41-30.
In the fourth, however, Oak Hill managed to pull away with 11 more points, while holding the Heritage bunch to just three in the final eight minutes of the game.
During the game, Oak Hill got 17 assists, one off of its season high of 18.
Tori Ellis scored 15 points for the Lady Raiders. Anna Ready and Paige Dawkins had a dozen points each.. Dawkins hit three big outside shots during the game for the Lady Raiders.
Kayla Hall put up two points for Oak Hill, but Hughey was most impressed with her defense.
“Kayla did a tremendous job defensively,” Hughey said. “She was in position all night. She played like a senior.”
Hall finished the game with three steals, five assists and three rebounds.
Rachel Herndon came off the bench for Oak Hill and scored seven of the team’s 11 points in the fourth quarter. She also had four steals in those eight minutes.
Maegen Ellis and Codi Williams finished the game with two points each.
In junior high action, the Lady Raiders were defeated by Heritage in a rare 44-31 loss to make the team 16-5 on the season.
Sarah Dill led the team with 14 points. Johanna Carnathan scored five, and Bet Langley and Macie Allen scored four each. Alice Amelia Wooten scored two for Oak Hill.
The Lady Raiders will be back in district action on Friday night, as they travel to Yazoo City to take on the Lady Mavericks of Manchester. Oak Hill is 1-0 this season against the Lady Mavs.
