Hebron loses nail-biter against Starkville Christian 55-53

November 13, 2012

Hebron Christian hosted Immanuel of Columbus this past Friday. The game was led at halftime by the Eagles, but multiple turnovers by Hebron saw Immanuel take over the game and go on to win 61-41. The scoring column was led by Will Corbin Rogers with 21 points.
Monday night, the Eagles made the short journey to Starkville Christian. In an up and down game, Hebron put forth an effort that could have won the game, but cold shooting in the second half saw the Eagles lose their lead and have to claw back into the game to take it to overtime. A few lead changes saw the Cougars take the lead over Hebron 55-53, but Rogers had the last shot. The shot rimmed out and the Eagles loss, 55-53.
An up and down first quarter saw Starkville Christian and Hebron trade buckets. The quarter ended with both teams tied at 12 all. The Eagles took the lead in the second quarter when Rogers put in nine points and Andrew Myatt helped with two points. The first ended with a 23-19 Hebron lead.
But the Eagles came out cold and missed multiple baskets to start the third quarter being outscored 16-6 by the Cougars. Starkville Christian brought the score to 35-29 in their favor at the end of the quarter. Yet the Eagles were resilient, Hebron clawed their way back into the game with help of Rogers who had an outstanding game. It came down to three final free throws with only 0.6 seconds left in the game. Rogers stepped to the free throw line with three shots and the Eagles trailing 49-47. Rogers hit the first and third shot taking the game to overtime.
In the three minute overtime period, the Eagles took the early lead when Troy Arnold hit one of his two free throws making the score 50-49. Starkville Christian answered with two buckets of their own bringing the score 53-50 at the halfway mark. Once again Hebron made the comeback a possibility when they tied it with 35 seconds left in overtime, 53-53. The Cougars made the shot they needed and went onto win the game 55-53.
Though the Eagles were on the losing end of the game, Rogers played a spectacular game. Rogers put up 32 points in the losing effort leading the Hebron charge. Myatt and Arnold scored 6 points each, Collin Moore contributed with 5 points, and Taylor Coggins scored 2 points.
Hebron Christian is on a two game skid, but hope to bounce back against Grace Christian of Louisville Tuesday night. Coach Gary Vaughn knows it is early but wants his Eagles to correct the mistakes they have been making in the coming weeks.
