The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles narrowly missed claiming the No. 1 seed going into the State Tournament on Monday, in a 55-54 overtime loss to Sharkey-Issaquena on Saturday.
The Hebron girls, however, got off to a good start at Benton Academy on Monday, defeating Newton Academy 46-22 to start the state tourney.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early four-point lead after one quarter. The offense was only able to get eight points on the board, but the defense held the Newton girls in check, with just four points.
“We played really well defensively, said head coach Greg Watkins after the game. “We usually limited them to one shot.”
It was the defense all afternoon that was the story of the Monday game. Newton never reached double-digits in scoring in a single quarter. In the second, they improved to seven points, but it was Hebron taking the 18-11 lead into the half.
In the second half, Hebron began to pull away, scoring 15 points in the third quarter. Newton’s girls were held to just half a dozen points in that period.
In the fourth, the Hebron defense remained solid, holding Newton to five points, while the offense put up a dozen points to secure the win.
Cathryn Moore scored 18 points for Hebron, and Tori Nichols put up 14 points.
Hillary Arnold scored 10, and Magen Tapley had four points in the game.
Nichols put up 36 points during the Sharkey game on Saturday.
The Hebron defense faltered in the third, giving up 19 points to the Lady Confederates. That is what allowed the Delta team to push an overtime quarter and eventually win the game.
The Hebron boys were also defeated on Saturday by a score of 52-34 by Tri-County. The Rebels scored 23 in the first in the win.
Carlton Clay netted 21 points for Hebron, and Chad Smitb scored six. David Kinard had three points, and Will Corbin Rogers and Ben Pearson scored two each.
Hebron will play again on Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. at Benton Academy.
