The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles were unbeatable in district play during the regular season. They can now add unbeatable against district teams in the post-season as well.
Last week, the girls enjoyed a bye, going into this year’s opening playoff round, but they were back on the court by Friday night, taking on Calhoun Academy. The Lady Cougars fell victim to the Hebron squad for the third time this season.
The next day, Hebron faced the Lady Rams of Kemper for the third time, and they defeated them 51-34 to take the district tournament and advance to Central State at No. 1.
“It was a really close game in the first half,” said Hebron head coach Greg Watkins. “Everybody stepped up though, and we played very good defense.”
In the opening period, the Hebron girls put up 13 points, while the Lady Rams stayed right on their heels with a dozen points of their own. Down by one, going into the second, Hebron out-scored the Lady Rams again, this time 9-6.
Hebron had a slim 22-18 lead going into the third quarter, but the Hebron girls would kick in their defensive game in the third and fourth quarters to cruise to victory.
In the third, Hebron scored 16, their best offensive quarter of the night. The defense held Kemper to just eight in the frame.
In the final period of regulation, the Hebron girls’ defense repeated the last quarter’s stop, holing Kemper to eight points again. Meanwhile, the offense put up 13 to seal the 17-point win.
Tori Nichols and Hillary Arnold both came out of the game with 20 points.
Cathryn Moore scored seven points, and Magen Tapley put up four on the night.
The Lady Eagles will not take the show to Winona, as they get set to play Central Holmes this evening. That game will start at 4 p.m.
