The Lady Eagles took on Sharkey-Issequena Academy in the opening round of the MAIS A North Central Tournament on the campus of Calhoun Academy.
Hebron Christian jumped out to an early 18-11 lead in the first half, but were outscored by Sharkey 15-3 in the second quarter giving the Lady Confederates a 26-21 advantage going into halftime. The Lady Eagles answered during the third quarter regaining the lead with three minutes left in the quarter and closed the third leading 33-32. Foul trouble hampered Hebron in the fourth quarter allowing Sharkey to pull away and defeat Hebron 59-40.
â€śAs you step up the ladder, the competition gets harder,â€ť said head coach William Cotton about the level of competition as a team goes deeper in the postseason, â€śI wanted our girls to experience this level of intensity while theyâ€™re still young.â€ť
The Lady Eagles closed out a rebuilding season with an overall record of 12-14. Hebron started a young core group of girls, and continued to grow throughout the season.
â€śI have a group of young girls that I am raising,â€ť said Coach Cotton about his teamâ€™s season, â€śIn a few years we could be a serious contender.â€ť
Eagles fall to Central Holmes
Hebron Christian entered into the MAIS A North Central Tournament following a district championship defeat to the hands of Winona Christian this past Saturday.
Placed as the second seed, the Eagles took on a strong Central Holmes out of district 4-A Tuesday night on the campus of Calhoun Academy in the opening round.
Following a close first quarter, the athleticism of Central Holmes over powered Hebron during the second quarter. The Trojans took a 28-22 lead over the Eagles by halftime. The second half, the Trojans led 45-33 at the close of the third quarter and finished the Eagles off 61-42 at the end of the game.
The Eagles ended the year with a 15-8 overall record and a 7-1 record in district. Hebron will lose a strong group of seniors but will also return a group of underclassmen that have picked up value experience throughout the 2012-2013 season.
