PHEBA — Channing Tapley constructed a reputation for late-game heroics this past fall.
In the MAIS eight-man football playoff game against Delta Academy on Nov. 13 in Pheba, the Hebron Christian sophomore added a needed two-point conversion on a quarterback-designed run, diving over the corner pylon of the end zone and a defender, during the fourth quarter. The conversion gave the gridiron Eagles a 20-14 advantage.
He later threw the game-winning pass to Drew Myatt in overtime for a 26-20 triumph.
On the baseball diamond, Tapley continued his game-changing ability, belting out a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh-inning to defeat Victory Christian, 2-1, Monday at Hebron Christian School.
With only three outs left for Hebron, senior Brandon England led off with a single into the left infield gap, representing the game-tying run. It was only one pitch later that Tapley pulled the base-clearing hit over the left field fence for the walk-off win.
The homer was Tapley’s lone hit of the night, finishing one-of-three at the plate.
