The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles won their second game in as many days on Tuesday evening at the Winona Preseason Tournament, defeating Greenville Christian 33-30 in overtime.

Once again, the Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead and let their opponents back in the game.

“We got out to a good lead and it just disintegrated on us,” said Hebron head coach William Cotton. “We need to be able to play four full quarters.”

Hebron led Greenville Christian 14-5 at halftime after the Eagles defense didn’t allow one point in the second quarter.

“We had good second quarters in both games and the others were mediocre at best,” Cotton said.

Greenville surged back to take a 28-26 lead late in the fourth quarter after trailing 21-16 at the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles’ Elaina Carter was fouled on her way to the basket with one second left, putting her at the free throw line to tie the game. Carter stepped to the line and made both foul shots to tie the game at 28-28. McKinsey Wedel and Micah Thompson each scored a basket in overtime for Hebron Christian.

Hebron’s free throw shooting did improve from Monday night, as they made 10-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe. Cotton said that he really emphasized his team’s foul shooting after the poor performance in the opener.

“You can ask them if I told them about it,” Cotton said.“Their effort has been good, the hustle has been good, but the shooting just hasn’t gotten there yet.”

Micah Thompson had a big day for the Lady Eagles, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Elaina Carter scored nine points and had six rebounds, while McKinsey Wedel added eight points and 11 rebounds. Rachel McGrew fouled out of the game, so other players had to step up their game to fill her shoes.

“Elaina stepped up and made the two free throws that we had to have,” Cotton said. “But Micah and McKinsey stepped up did what had to be done.”

Hebron Christian will play again on Saturday with the junior high tipping off at 1 p.m. and the varsity at 2:15 p.m. This will be the Lady Eagles’ last game of the Winona Preseason Tournament.
