Gun holiday law soon takes effect

June 17, 2014

Clay County residents looking to purchase a firearm may want to wait until September, when Mississippi will offer a tax-free holiday for the purchase of guns and gun accessories.
Gov. Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2425 into law April 2, which will take effect July 1, giving Mississippi a tax-free holiday the first weekend in September every year going forward.
The Mississippi Second Amendment Weekend will include tax exemption on individual sales of firearms, firearm accessories, ammunition, archery equipment and certain hunting supplies.
“Many Mississippians share my strong belief in the Second Amendment and love the outdoors,” Bryant said in a statement released to media. “This tax holiday will help ensure Mississippians continue to enjoy our state’s great outdoor heritage for years to come.”
Gary Dedeaux, owner of Gary’s Pawn and Gun in West Point and Columbus, said he plans on the tax-free holiday being a big weekend for his stores.
“You’re saving 7 percent on firearms and accessories,” Dedeaux said. “Seven percent in the gun industry is a lot of money.”
Gary’s Pawn and Gun typically has two to three big sales a year, according to Dedeaux. He said in the last two years his two locations have sold 1,200 firearms total during the sales.
He said accessories, such as scopes and gun cases, can run as much as $2,000. The sales tax exemption of a $2,000 item would be $140 right off the top, which makes a big difference, according to Dedeaux.
He said the influx of customers during the holiday weekend shouldn’t lead to longer waits for background checks, which are mandatory by law for all customers who don’t possess a carry permit.
“We have a form you fill out, and we send it to the FBI, who run it through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System,” Dedeaux said. “If the questions on the form are answered truthfully, you can buy a gun.”
