The last two 5A Region 1 matches for the Green Wave of West Point High School (7-1; 4-0) have been close. A 22-20 win over Oxford two weeks ago was followed up with Friday night’s 28-27 win over Lake Cormorant, on the road.
This Friday night, the Green Wave will return home to take on the Tigers of Saltillo (3-5; 0-4). The Tigers are still looking for their first district win of the 2010 season.
They will be taking on a West Point team, which could be closing in on that Region 1 district title in a couple of weeks. Right now, the Green Wave are undefeated in league play.
Before defeating Oxford and Lake Cormorant, the Green Wave took down Gentry and New Hope in consecutive weeks as part of district play.
The Tigers started the season with a loss to Mooreville, but followed that performance with three consecutive wins over Caledonia, Baldwyn and Booneville.
District play started, and Saltillo has not won since, falling to Clarksdale, Hernando, Gentry and New Hope.
Right now, New Hope is 3-1 in the district, with their only loss being to West Point.
West Point will face Clarksdale and Hernando, on the road, to end the season. New Hope is set to face Clarksdale, Hernando and Gentry to finish their regular season run.
Kickoff this Friday will be at 7 p.m., at West Point.
