When West Point takes the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night, the Green Wave will look to make history.

West Point is trying to become only the third team in school history to finish with an undefeated record, joining the 1982 and 1989 Green Wave squads. The 2017 West Point team could become the first team in school history to finish 15-0.

The Green Wave are also trying to wrap up back-to-back championships for the first time since the 2009 and 2010 teams won consecutive state titles.

A win on Saturday would give West Point its ninth state championship in school history.

In contrast, Hattiesburg is trying to win its first state championship. The Tigers have played for the state championship four times, but have come out on the losing end each time in 1989, 1992, 1995, and 1998.

The matchup between the two undefeated teams is a rematch of the 1989 state championship game, coincidentally the last time West Point finished with an undefeated record.

West Point head coach Chris Chambless is looking to win his fourth state championship when the two teams kick off Saturday night.
