The West Point Green Wave football team dedicated their 2010 state championship title to the West Point community when they won the trophy three weeks ago. West Point head coach Chris Chambless said that was largely due to how much the community had given the program during such a poor economy.
On Tuesday, members of that Green Wave championship team had a chance to give back to the community, by giving a local family some much-needed gifts for Christmas through the Adopt a Family program.
Kenny Fowler, with the West Point Touchdown Club, spearheaded the adoption over the last two weeks.
“It’s been a whirlwind since we’ve won it,” Chambless said. “I’ve been gone a week, so (Kenny) Mr. Fowler has stepped up and taken care of things. He and I wanted to adopt a family for Christmas, and he’s taken the lead on getting the guys together and getting some donations and helping give back to the community.”
Several players were on hand on Tuesday afternoon to help unload a trailer that included some smaller Christmas gifts for the children, but they also took a lot of large items into the house.
There were TVs, a couch, recliners and many other pieces of furniture donated by the Touchdown Club.
“We want to help the community out because they help us out,” Chambless said.
Fowler said that this was a good opportunity for the players to give back and to see some of the community’s people in need.
“I wanted these guys to come out and help out and do a little community service,” Fowler said. “They need to see what’s going on with these people in need.”
During the recent state championship game, over 1,000 West Point fans showed up to make it a true home field advantage for the Green Wave. There were also over 300 fans that showed up in Daytona Beach, Fla. earlier this season when West Point played Mainland High School.
“We appreciate them, and we appreciate the community supporting us,” Fowler said. “That’s why we want to give back to the community.”
