The West Point Green Wave (10-1; 7-0) are riding high going into the first week of the playoffs. The Provine Rams (5-6; 4-3) are riding pretty high themselves.
Winners of four of their last five, the Rams overcame a slow start to the 2010 season to secure a playoff spot after a four-game winning streak in the district catapulted the Rams into the playoffs.
They did fall in last week’s league game against 11-0 Ridgland team, but that was the first loss for the Rams since October 1 at Pear.
Provine went on to defeat Yazoo City, Neshoba Central, Lanier and Canton. That was enough to get them into the 5A playoffs, which will kickoff this Friday night here in West Point.
The Green Wave come in with a perfect record in district, and they are riding an eight game winning streak, after falling in game three to Starkville.
They are also coming off a 21-14 win over Hernanodo.
In 2009, West Point finished with a 10-1 regular season record and entered the playoff with an undefeated record in league play, also winning the district that year.
The Green Wave opened the post season in 2009 with a 36-0 win over Canton. They went on to defeat Pearl and New Hope for a second time, before winning the state title game against Wayne County.
The Green Wave will begin their 2010 push for the 5A state title at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
