The Green Wave of West Point High School will be getting their first taste of Delta football tonight, as they travel about two and a half hours down Highway 82 to Indianola.
There they will go head-to-head with the Indianola-Gentry Rams.
Like the Green Wave, Gentry has played four games in the first five weeks of the season, enjoying a bye week last Friday night.
Things got off to a bit of a shaky start for the Rams earlier in the season. Back-to-back losses marred the first two games for Gentry, who fell to Greenville-Weston 15-14 and experienced a more sound defeat to Greenville, a 28-6 affair in week two.
After that, the Rams games similar to their first two, only this time they were fortunate enough to come out on the winning side.
In week three, they faced Ruleville Central out of Sunflower County, and they held a slim lead, finishing with an 8-0 win.
The next week, the Humphreys County Cowboys were at Gentry, and the Rams offense exploded for 28 points, in the shutout victory.
After a week to regroup, Gentry will be home again, this time facing the 3-1 Green Wave, who just came off a home rival win over Noxubee County.
The 28-13 victory came a week after West Point’s 16 game winning streak was snapped, at home, by Starkville.
Last season, Gentry and West Point faced off in week five, and the Rams were one of 14 teams that were victimized by the Wave in 2009.
In 2008, West Point won the meeting between the two teams 14-0. In 2007, the Green Wave took the Rams 39-6.
