On December 17, the West Point Lady Green Wave played the Lady Tigers of Saltillo for the first time, defeating them for their first district win of the season.
Over a month has gone by, and the two teams are set to match up against one anther again tonight, this time in West Point.
With three teams battling for first place in the district, meaning a top seed at the upcoming district tournament, every district game is vital.
“It’s a huge game, a district game,” said head coach Jemmye Ann Helms. “We need to win that game.”
Last week, the Lady Wave welcomed Oxford to town for the team’s second district game, and the Lady Chargers cruised past West Point to even their record at 1-1. On Tuesday night, the Lady Wave rebounded with a win over New Hope.
West Point will have the Lady Tigers here tonight, and they will will host the Lady Trojans on Tuesday. Both of those games are important, as they lead to the rematch with Oxford next Thursday night.
“If we beat New Hope and Saltillo, that game will determine one and two,” Helms said. “They’re big games, and we need to win every one of them.”
Helms says that her team, which had a 13-game winning streak snapped last Friday, is ready for tonight’s match.
“I think they’ll come out and play hard,” Helms said. “If we get some of the rough spots off, we’ll be fine.”
Tonight’s game will start at 6 p.m., following senior night recognition.
